Everything you need to know about menopause

Menopause

What is the difference between menopause and the transition phase?

The terms "perimenopause" (or "the transition") and "menopause" are often used interchangeably, but there is a subtle difference. Menopause is a specific point in time: the day that marks exactly 12 months since a woman's last period. It is essentially a single moment that can only be determined in retrospect. The transition, on the other hand, refers to the broader process—the years leading up to and following menopause—during which the body gradually produces less estrogen. This process lasts an average of 4 to 10 years. During this time, symptoms such as hot flashes, sleep disturbances, mood swings, and irregular periods may occur.

What is menopause?

Menopause marks the natural end of menstrual cycles. It is defined as the point in time when a person has not had a period for 12 months—typically occurring between the ages of 45 and 55.

At what age does menopause begin?

The average age for menopause is 51, although it can occur earlier or later. Genetics, health, and lifestyle all play a role.

How long does menopause last?

Menopause symptoms can last for several years, but this varies greatly from person to person. Some people notice changes over a period of less than two years, while others experience symptoms for ten years or more.

What are the first signs of menopause?

Early signs of menopause that occur during perimenopause often include irregular periods, hot flashes, night sweats, as well as mood or sleep disturbances.

What are the most common symptoms of menopause?

Common symptoms include hot flashes, sleep disturbances, mood swings, vaginal dryness, weight fluctuations, and a decrease in bone density. However, everyone's experience and body are unique.

Is weight gain a symptom of menopause?

Weight gain is not caused by menopause alone, but hormonal changes can shift fat distribution, particularly in the abdominal area. Age, metabolism, and lifestyle also play a role.

Can you get pregnant after menopause?

No. Once menopause is reached (12 months without a period), a natural pregnancy is no longer possible.

Is the treatment safe?

For many people, treatment during perimenopause and menopause is safe; however, this depends on age, personal health status, and family medical history. A medical professional will help determine if treatment is appropriate for you.

Do I need a referral from my GP?

No, you do not need a referral from your GP. At the start of your treatment, we will provide you with a letter that you can share with your GP so they are informed about your care. Upon request, we can also transmit your data to the LSP (National Exchange Point) so that other healthcare providers remain informed.

How much does the medication cost?

In most cases, the cost of the medication is covered by your health insurance; however, please keep your deductible in mind.

How do I receive the medication?

We ship the medication free of charge in discreet packaging. You can choose to have it delivered to your home or pick it up at a PostNL location.
